Venice Grand Canal The history of Venice Italy goes back thousands of years. Originally a series of small islands in a lagoon, Venice soon became a center of commerce. Its location in the lagoon protected it from invading armies and it became the central authority of the area and grew rapidly. Eventually the small islands were connected to each other by wooden bridges forming a larger city with waterways replacing the traditional paved roads. There have been thousands of paintings of this beautiful location. In my rendition (24 x 30 Oil) the Doge’s palace is seen on the left of the grand canal while on the right the beautiful Baroque architecture of the Santa Maria della Salute Basilica church, one of the most beautiful churches in Venice is rendered. Although I typically paint scenes from Oregon and Idaho, especially around my home town of Star, I was inspired by this scene, which is complex but is so magnificent. I hope you enjoy it.
